Quran and modern Science: the three dark stages
ABOUT SERMON:
According to Surah az-Zumar (6), Allah creates humans in the womb of their mothers in various stages, one after another, systematically in three veils of darkness (فِيظُلُمَاتٍثَلَاثٍ). Thus, to Him belongs all the people from all the corners of the world because he designs and creates all the humans while in their mothers’ wombs. The three veils include; the darkness of the anterior abdominal wall, the darkness of the uterine wall, and the darkness of the amniochorionic membrane. In the embryonic stages, the females’ and males’ reproductive organs (the ovaries and the testicles) start near the kidney between the eleventh and twelfth ribs and the spinal column. The female gonads descend to the pelvis while the males’ descent through the inguinal canal reach the scrotum. Even after the reproductive organs have descended, later in the adult, they receive their blood and nerve supply from the Abdominal Aorta, which is between the ribs and the spinal column (backbone). Thus, these organs, which are the main in the reproduction, emits from between the ribs and the backbone; thus, it can be cited as the place where a child comes from. This information is backed up by the Qur’anic verse, which states that “Now let man but think from what he is created!
He is created from a drop emitted – proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs” (Al-Qur’an 86:5-7). Also, the Glorious Qur’an has mentioned more than eleven times than humans are created from nutfah “16:4, 18:37, 22:5, 23:13, 35:11, 36:77, 40:67, 53:46, 75:37, 76:2 & 80:19”. Notably, the term nutfah means a minute quantity of liquid. This scientific knowledge given by the Qur’an remains unknown until modern science proved that only one sperm out of the three million sperm produced by males is needed to fertilize an ovum. Thus only over three million of the sperms which are needed for the creation of a human being. Modern science has identified that the fetus’ sex identity is not based on the nature of the ova but it is determined by the sperms, as many thought some centuries back as it is indicated in the Qur’an. In this, the sex of the fetus, whether male or female, is dependent on whether the 23rd chromosome pair is XY or XX. “Primarily sex determination occurs at fertilization and depends upon the type of sex chromosome in the sperm that fertilizes an ovum, thus, if it is an ‘X’ bearing sperm that fertilizes the ovum, the fetus is a female, and if it is a ‘Y’ bearing sperm, then the fetus is a male” (Jorge, 2010). According to the Qur’an, “that He did create in pairs – male and female, from a seed when lodged (in its place)” (53:45-46). Also, in the Qur’an, it states: “Was he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)? Then did he become a clinging clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion. And of him, He made two sexes, male and female” (Al-Qur’an 75:37-39). Therefore, still, many people like Indians tend to desire to have male grandchildren compared to female grandchildren. However, when their daughters-in-law fail to give birth to females, they blame them for not knowing their sex determination is based on their son.
If only they had this revelation from the Qur’anic verses, they would never blame females regarding the sex determination issues. According to the Qur’anic verse (23:12-14), it states that “Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay); then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed; then we made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot, We made a (fetus) lump; then We made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then We developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create!” therefore, according to this Al-Qur’anic verse, Allah created man out of small liquid quantity which is fixed firmly in the place of rest where it is well protected. Looking at modern science, scientists have discovered that the uterus part in females is well shielded by the spinal column from the posterior, while the back muscles give firm support. As per modern science, the embryo is highly protected by a sac-like substance that contains amniotic fluid. This fluid is crucial in absorbing the shock which might happen during the day-to-day activities of the pregnant female. The amniotic liquid is made of an “alaqah” substance.
